Is excessive bleeding normal after rhinoplasty?

I had a rhinoplasty a week ago, two days ago doctor removed my cast. Today I started laughing on my mom’s joke and saw a blood dripping from my nose, after that it started bleeding heavily I was able to stop it after 4-5 minutes. Is that normal after rhinoplasty?

Hello and thanks for your question- To answer it, it really depends on what "bleeding heavily" really means. I tell my patients that for the first few days the nose will "ooze." Much after this I don't expect heavy bleeding. It also depends whether or not turbinate reduction In summary, if it stopped in a couple minutes I wouldn't worry too much about it. Hope this helps and God Bless!Dr. Robb

It is normal to bleed for up to a week or slightly longer after a rhinoplasty depending upon the type of procedure and the amount of work that may have been done to your septum. That being said, I would avoid blood thinners and make your surgeon's office aware in case they have any additional recommendations.

Sorry to hear this has happened. It is not uncommon to have bleeding after rhinoplasty but it should be self limited and should become more and more infrequent. If you are continuous bleeding then you should contact your plastic surgeon. Good luck!

The nose is very delicate and the face is very vascular, Bleeding for about 7 days more or less is normal. If you feel that the bleeding is excessive it is always best to contact your surgeon.
