Normal for Rhinoplasty Swelling to Increase Suddenly After a Month?

Question

I had a Septoplasty  , and turbinate reduction for breathing improvement, from esthetic point I had a hump reduction , Osteotomy for my wide nasal bridge , and minimal tip reduction.  The doctor mentioned I should expect 80% swelling reduction by 1 month and the rest will continue for 6 month to a year, everything was going fine , by the  5th week  I noticed a gradual increase in my swelling  to my bridge and the tip to a point It is difficult to laugh.   Is that normal,   what can increase the swelling and should I do anything about it.

Hi Dp,
Swelling of the nose 5 weeks after rhinoplasty is not normal, you should contact your rhinoplasty surgeon immediately and be examined to make sure that you don't have an infection.  Good luck and be well.

This sounds quite unusual. There may be several potential reasons including reaction to grafts or implanted materials. You should take a picture and submit this to your surgeon for recommendations and advice.

I found this quiet common to see increased swelling in the tip of the nose after the first month. The swelling should start to decrease continuously after the third month. Be patient! If it doesn't improve, then you should contact your surgeon.

Commonly, after Rhinoplasty there is a gradual decrease in nose swelling. Although the swelling drops significantly after the first month it does not completely resolve for many months. ANY sudden reversal of this pattern with increase in swelling especially if accompanied by redness should be regarded as an infection and treated aggressively. Please, see your surgeon.

One thing this may be due to is bone healing.  It could be due to other things as well.  Have your surgeon give it a look just to be sure.

It is not normal to have increasing swelling starting one month after rhinoplasty. An infection is possible, especially if the swelling is tender. See your surgeon for an evaluation.
