2 weeks post tummy tuck and now experiencing swelling after drain removal, is this normal?

I had a full tummy tuck with lipo a little over two weeks ago. I had my drains removed two days ago and notice that where my drains were on my pubic area is sore and more swollen. Is this normal?

Occasionally after having drains removed, the area can retain some fluid and become swollen. As long as it is not red and very painful, it usually resolves on its own. Check in with your operating surgeon and have them look at it. It is the best way to figure out if there is a real issue to be concerned about.

Dear danniellnicole,it is hard to tell for sure without an examination. Generally speaking, it is normal to have some swelling after drain removal.  I would suggest you to consult your plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.

A small amount of swelling at the drain exit site may be normal healing. More significant swelling, extending in the abdomen with fluid moving around would be consistent with a seroma. You need to be examined by your surgeon to assess whether this is normal healing, a seroma, or other issue.

Thank you for your question. It really depends. If it is only a little bit of swelling, this can be normal. However, if it is enough to make you uncomfortable, then chances are you may have a seroma or a fluid collection. This is something that can be taken care of in the office, but you should definitely have your Plastic Surgeon evaluate you sooner rather than later so that you do not get an infection and/or affect your overall wound healing. Depending on the amount removed or aspirated, this procedure may need to be done a couple of times to ensure that the fluid doesn't come back - but your PS will definitely be able to better help you.
