Can ramus bone in mandible be used for dorsal augmentation?

Question

a doctor told me that he can use ramus bone from the jaw because the bone is not needed and that he can take a piece of the bone and augment my dorsum....has anybody ever heard of this? and are bone grafts from the jaw to the nose hoe good do they hold up in the long term 10-20 years from now?

I have not heard of bone from the ramus, but I have heard of bone from the ribs.  I would suggest you ask that doctor for details as to his experience with ramus bone grafting including whether he is board certified or not, how many of these has he done, what results he has gotten, and if he can show you before and after photos.  At that point, you will be able to make up your mind whether that procedure is for you or not.

I am not sure it is a good idea. I just removed a hip bone (iliac crest) from a patient who had it done more than 25 years ago. Given that we have so many other options available like nasal septal cartilage, ear cartilage, rib cartilage then using a bone seems unnecessary. Also, in my patient's case it had become crooked over time. I had to replace that with ear cartilage graft.
