After liposuction there are 'true' scars in the skin where the cannula is inserted. The lumpy areas are usually not clumps of scar tissue, since the liposuction cannulas ordinarily do not cut the fat tissue. The lumpy areas are usually "hardened" (medically called indurated) fat lumps, created in the early phase by the macrophages (white blood cells that remodel the injury) that infiltrate the fat. If there are clumps of dead fat, then another kind of collagen producing cell, called a fibroblast, may try to wall off this clump by building collagen. Either way, massage after warm epsom salt bathes can help if you are between 3 weeks and 3 months out. (only shower the first 3 weeks post procedure) After 3 months, and up to 6 months post-op, we have had patients respond to ultrasound treatments that create deep tissue warmth, increasing circulation. (This kind of ultrasound is used by physical therapists to increase circulation in injured tissues - it is completely different from diagnostic/imaging ultrasounds). Not every surgical office has an ultrasound machine. You may need to see a physical therapist to get the ultrasound treatments.
