Is it okay to go under laser hair removal procedure on my face while I am using hydroquinone and tretinoin creams on my face?

I have been using Tretinoine 0.05% and strong Hydroquinone creams on my face to treat the hyperpigmentation caused by my acnes. I want to do a laser hair removal procedure on my face. Is there going to be a problem?

Thank you for your question in regards to laser hair removal. It is suggested to discontinue those topicals at least one week prior to laser due to higher risk of pigmentation complications. To be sure what is best for you, see two or more board-certified providers in your area for a complete evaluation to make sure you are a good candidate and that it is safe for you to have treatment. I hope this helps.

hydroquinine can be used during laser hair removal, but it is recommended to hold tretinoin for one week prior to the laser. It can be resumed a day after treatment if the skin is not irritated. Tretinoin will make your skin vulnerable to unwanted side effects such as prolonged redness and possible burns

I would recommend stopping both those topical creams for 1 week prior to any laser treatments.  You should also stay off of them for another week after the laser treatment.  More importantly, bring your specific creams to the physician performing the treatment and get their educated professional opinion.  Good luck.

laser hair removal is done by the laser attracting to the color in the hair follicles which then damages the follicles so that the hair does not grow back.  For that reason any medication that changes the skin quality like retinoids or bleaching or tanning should be avoided during treatment for at least 2 weeks prior as the skin can discolor for the treatment either hyper-pigment or hypo-pigmentation
