I was told that 1.5 mm was removed but that there is still enamel. The prepped teeth look extremely small to me and am worried that too much Dentin has been exposed and that the bond will not be strong enough for a veneer.
Answer: I want porcelain veneers, Was too much healthy tooth structure removed to have a strong bond?photo Since your are asking for porcelain veneers, unfortunately from the photos, which is an impression of your prepared teeth, it looks like the preparation was a little more aggressive for having dental veneers. These preparation are more for a 3/4 porcelain crown, rather than veneers. The 1.5 mm is not supposed to be removed from the whole body of your tooth but merely from the chewing edge of your tooth, or the incisal edge, which is maximum recommended. The whole idea to have porcelain veneers vs porcelain crowns is to salvage tooth structure and bond to enamel for a stronger bond and hence longer longevity of your porcelain restoration. Please keep in mind that I have not seen your pre-op or before smile to determine if these preparations by your dentist is conservative or not. That being said hopefully your dentist has great knowledge on dentin bonding protocol to make your porcelain restorations last a long time. From the picture alone, I can predict that a lot of enamel has been taken off, and there must be certainly lots of dentin exposure and the prepared teeth are short, solely depending on dentin bonding. Hopefully you do not have a traumatic bite or occlusion, and if you do it is wise to relieve the heavy bite from these porcelain restorations, you are about to receive. Once the tooth is prepared unfortunately we can not add enamel to the teeth any more. Good Luck.

Answer: Are veneers damaging for your teeth? Veneer preparation can involve just 0.5mm of enamel removal and in most cases there is still enough enamel. In some cases more preparation is involved if the teeth stick out etc.In my practice if the teeth are relatively straight then we can place veneers very easily and they can last up to 15 years! In some cases I recommend Invisalign to straighten the teeth so as to get a better result and also to reduce tooth preparation. When seeing a dentist always look at before and after cases and pay for a wax up of your existing teeth. In this case the photo does not show a wax up but a model of the prepared teeth, which does look like 1.5mm preparations.

Answer: Did you have this done for just cosmetic reasons? Reason I ask is because sometimes more tooth reduction is needed if there is existing bonding, decay, or other things. Also, the amount of reduction depends on where you started. If your teeth were really flaring or crooked...then more reduction is necessary to achieve proper arch form and the cosmetic effect. Without seeing x-rays and pre-operative photographs it's hard to tell. I have to say- one of the biggest problems in cosmetic dentistry though is UNNECESSARY tooth reduction. When there is not a clear "road map" for most dentist they'll just "create room" so that the ceramist can fill it in. Rather than getting the dreaded call from the ceramist "Hey Doc, you didn't leave me enough room" - which then requires the process to, essentially, start over.

Answer: Veneers i am an orthodontist , so according to me best way to get teeth align is braces, because by that i m preserving natural tooth structure, when i start any of my veneer case , i always tell my patient " YOU R KILLING YR NATURAL TOOTH STRUCTURE". so u have to remember this. also much more care is required. in yr case prep is little more, but its already done, so can't do anything. sometimes more prep is required in maligned teeth. for minimum reduction go for veneers followed by ortho treatment.

Answer: How much is too much It is true that bonding to enamel is stronger than to dentin howeveras long as there is enough surface area which appears in your photothen you should be ok. It is hard to determine from your photo howmuch tooth structure was removed and the reason for the removal. If your dentist was correcting mal aligned teeth or needed to compensatefor a rotation of a tooth then that type of preparation may be necessary. Please post the photos of your veneers after they are bonded.
