Thank you for your question about this particular component of #breast surgery.Unless I am performing a breast reduction or a breast lift (mastopexy) at the same time, which are often done under general anesthesia, I only perform my areolar and nipple surgery under local anesthesia; very occasionally, a patient is very nervous and I will offer oral or intravenous sedation. It is very simple to anesthetize both areolae and both nipples with very minimal (and quick) discomfort, after which you will feel no pain. I use normally a combination of short (lidocaine) and long-acting (marcaine) local anesthetics so you are pain-free for several hours. It is likely safer to have it done under local anesthesia, whenever it is feasible. You may read my blog on areola and nipples for more information.Hope this reassures you.All the best,#DrMarcDuPere, #Toronto board-cerfitied plastic surgeon
