Received FUT 3000 a few months prior. Scar is wide on right sided compared to left. Was originally planning (before the first FUT) to have another FUT ~2000 graft transplant 1 year later, but now question the next best step as I don’t want my scar to widen with a second procedure. I know the scar still has time to mature, but wanted to get people opinion on FUT vs. FUE. I would like to maximize graft yield with repeat FUT if possible. I’ve spoken with my doc, but looking for second opinion
Answer: Hair transplants Thank you for your question and photos.FUE is better with no scars. the number of grafts a patient will need depends on the thickness of their hair and the extent of their hair loss, which can be determined by the Norwood Scale below. During a hair transplant, grafts are usually removed from the ‘donor area’ located on the back of the scalp and relocated to a balding area. The back of the scalp makes a good extraction area due to the high volume of hair follicles that congregate within that region that are not affected by the balding process. Specialist surgeons will remove a small amount of tissue that can grow hair and relocate it to the desired area of the head without damaging them.

Answer: Repeat FUT procedure When it is time for a repeat hair transplant procedure ideally the original scar would be cut out so that the wound could be closed with less of a scar. This would depend on how many grafts are needed for a repeat procedure. FUTs performed by facial plastic surgeons typically have minimal scars

Answer: Another FUT is likely possible Yes, you maybe a candidate for a second FUT procedure. Have your dr. check your skin laxity (but wait at least until 8 months after your first procedure)Unfortunately, the scar width will not improve with time. A second FUT will likely cause a similar scar, or perhaps even wider since there will be more skin tension. FUE is amlost always possible, also in your case. Typically patients that have experienced both methods prefer FUE since it is far less invasive.FUE and FUT combined will mathematically produce the maximum yield in terms of total amount of grafts that are transplantable.

Answer: A second hair transplant I would have to know more about the condition in your donor area such as laxity before the first procedure, the tightness of the closure where the scar widened, the laxity now of the entire donor area. A scar excision is possible along with the hair transplant performed by both strip and FUE in the same surgery for maximum yield.
