I'm having a sliding genioplasty reversed. One doctor said the notches would still remain and he would shave down the step-off to prevent any cosmetic effects in my jawline. How does this work? Are there any other ways to attenuate the step-off? I can also feel the metal hardware in my chin. It feels like a scew is popping up on one side. Is there a way to make sure the patient doesn't feel the metal hardware? I didn't feel this before, so does this mean my body is pushing out the metal?

The genioplasty can certainly accomplish that type of result properly done. The area under the chin will 'flatten' with the tension of the advancing bone on the underlying muscle; and look improved. An implant will not be as suitable
It would be helpful to see pictures of your face to provide a more qualified answer. Some form of bone augmentation is almost always best, whether it just chin implant augmentation, chin and jaw angle augmentation or a more complete wrap around jawline implant.
