Question

I had an FUE procedure done 7 months, and my question is related to the growth of hairs. I know grafts can contain 1, 2, 3, 4 hair follicles at a time (if not more for all I know). My question is, the grafts that contain multiple hair follicles, do the hair follicles in those particular grafts grow back at the same time, or different rates. For example a graft with 3 hair follicles, will all 3 follicles grow back at the same time (since they are a part of same graft) or grow at different rates?

Great question! When you have an FUE hair transplant, each graft can contain multiple hair follicles&mdash;typically anywhere from 1 to 4 hairs. In general, the hair follicles within a single graft tend to grow back at the same time because they share the same blood supply and healing process. However, it's not uncommon for the hairs to appear to grow at slightly different rates, especially in the early months after the procedure. This is because each hair follicle can be in different phases of the hair growth cycle (anagen, catagen, or telogen) at the time of transplant.
So, while the hair follicles in a single graft are expected to grow relatively in sync, slight variations in the growth rate can happen due to the individual cycle each follicle was in when transplanted. At 7 months, you’re still in the phase where hair growth continues to mature, so you should see fuller and more even growth in the coming months. The full results typically become noticeable around 12 to 18 months post-op.

When there are multiple hairs in one follicular unit, each hair grows at it's own pace.  It is possible for one hair to be in anagen phase, one in telogen phase and another in exagen phase.  This is referred to as mosaicism.  But it is also possible (depending on hormonal and physical factors) for follicles or even areas of follicles to synchronize and go through phases together (as seen in Telogen Effluvium)  It's hard to predict in an individual person what will happen but in most cases of scalp hair transplant, the transplanted hair behaves in a mosaic fashion and grows sporadically over the first year or two.
