Is fluid surrounding skin expander normal?

Question

I had a double mastectomy after BC with implants fitted in same op. One implant failed because of excessive fluid build up and was removed.(It was aspirated many times but just immediately filled up again.) After 11 months I have had a skin expander fitted (1 week ago) The drain was removed after 2 days but now I'm home the breast has filled with fluid and is the same size as my other one. So an increase of about 50%. Should I be concerned or will it disperse if left alone.

Chronic seroma formation after mastectomy and implant/ expander reconstruction can be of many causes, In your condition this has been going on for one year. I am sure you and your doctors are frustrated. The causes can be lymphatic leak, inflammatory capsule formation around the seroma. Basic measures to treat chronic seroma include; long term drain insertion (infection is a concern with long term drain). Treat the seroma cavity with installation of medications to encourage adhesion through stimulation an inflammatory process. surgical removal of the inflammatory capsule. Use of sutures to obliterate the dead-space, with long term drain. Culture the seroma fluid for all strange bacteria including mycobacteria.If all fails, reconsider the method of breast reconstruction, use of Latissmus dorsi flap, and Flap reconstruction.
