A full face CO2 resurfacing will leave your skin very uncomfortable. Many studies have been done which show that healing will occur faster under an occlusive dressing. This is applied after the procedure. With the dressing in place, you will be much more comfortable, and will not have the burning sensation that can occur without it. It is usually kept on for about 3 days. After that, you will be using some sort of ointment - such as vaseline or aquaphor to keep it well hydrated as it heals.
There are many facial dressings available for use after CO2 laser resurfacing. These can be as simple as an occlusive plastic material up to hydrating facial dressings. In my experience, frequent application of post-laser ointment is just as effective without being as disconcerting as an occlusive dressing. You might want to ask what dressing your surgeon will use. It is okay to take ibuprofen after your laser resurfacing procedure. You can also apply a cool pack to the area, but wrap it in a soft and clean cotton cloth first. Make sure to keep your head elevated.
