My friend has offered for me to stay at her place and take care of me for a week and then I would fly back home. Is it preferable not to sit on a plane that long and could there be complications after I get back home that would make it preferable to be located near your doctor? Also, I don't have as much fat as I would like to, but a doctor said it was still doable so would it be better to not sit at all for longer than a week to make sure I keep as much fat as I can?
Answer: Travel Restrictions after a BBL Thank you for your inquiry. For your safety, most plastic surgeons require a 5-7 day stay at a nearby location of your choosing after the Brazilian Butt Lift Procedure. During this time, you will attend follow-up appointments to ensure that you are properly progressing in your recovery. This gives you the perfect opportunity to address any questions or concerns face-to-face with the doctor once the healing process has begun. After this period, you are free to travel back to your home state; however, I suggest investing in highly cushioned pillow specifically made for BBL patient's recovery for the flight. In regards to determining if you have adequate amount of fat necessary for a Brazilian Butt lift, you will need to be evaluated by plastic surgeon in order to accurately determine this. I hope this answers your questions and good luck. Best, Dr. Fisher, MD

Answer: Bad Idea to Travel 6 Hours Away to Do a BBL There are no hard and fast rules on when to fly after this procedure. Spending a week with your friend caring for you before taking a six-hour flight home seems reasonable. Most would recommend a week or two before flying. The main risk that would be the most serious would be development of a blood clot in the legs that can then migrate to the lungs. Sitting for long periods of time puts you at higher risk due to being stationary. Pressure on the fat, etc. are also possibilities. It is always best to ask these questions of your chosen plastic surgeon as recommendations may be different.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

Answer: Most Favorable Outcome Ideally and for your safety, it is recommended that you attend at least one follow-up appointment within the week after surgery. With BBL specifically, it is also preferable that you make every attempt to avoid sitting on your backside for as long as possible after surgery to prevent unwanted affects to the fat transferred to your buttocks. Risks after any surgery do include blood clots so you would want to take measures to prevent such a concern. I recommend consulting with your Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon to discuss your plans and the risks, to ensure a safe and favorable outcome. We wish you the best and do invite you to contact our office with questions.
