What happens when you retain a stitch? (photos)

Question

After a BL I started to spit stitches 2 weeks ago. Then the lower part of my R breast became red. My PC said I had retained a stitch. After another day my breast began to fill with blood, and I had to go back to surgery. My PC took out the retained stitches and put a drain in. My question is what is a retained stitch and how can I avoid this happening in future. My PS put more stitches in. I’ve worn my surgical bra day and night. Could that have cause the stitch retention?

I understand your concern. Retained stitches do not cause hematoma. Also, it is difficult to assess your breasts with mere pictures. It is best that you visit your plastic surgeon to have yourself properly assessed. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.

I have to agree with Dr. Morgan. The stitch did not cause the blood collection/hematoma. A retained stitch is one that does not dissolve. Some sutures are made of material that never dissolves. If you are concerned that your plastic surgeon used stitches that don't dissolve then please ask him/her what they used. I am sorry you had a complication requiring a return to the OR.
