Chest x-ray revealed mild hyperinflation without focal infiltrate. What does that mean? Will this cause an issue during surgery?

It is always best to have preop clearance from your primary care physician prior to any surgical procedure.  Any abnormal findings should be reviewed by your PCP and referred to a specialist if necessary.

Hi.  "Without focal infiltrate" means that your lungs show no signs of having a pneumonia or similar issue.  That's good."Mild hyperinflation" means the volume of your lungs is slightly expanded, as might be seen in early COPD with early emphysema.  Best to speak with your family doc more about that one.Shouldn't be a problem to undergo surgery, though, if all your other tests are normal.

Best to duscuss this with your primary physician and I would see your PCP to discuss prior to surgery but this is unlikely to be an acute issue during your surgery.   This may be normal if you took a very large breath for your xray but is most likely due to some chronic emphysematous changes from smoking. 

What you describe does not sound like it would cause any problems with surgery. However, you should discuss your x-ray with the surgeon who is planning your procedure, and also with the anesthesiology team that will be helping

Make sure to discuss the findings with your surgeon and PCP. They will give you guidance on this problem. Most probably they were caused by you past smoking habits.Hope this helps,Dr. Gus Diaz
