Exactly one week ago, I had restylane refine injected into my tear troughs. A few days later, I started experiencing sinus problems that don't go away with sudafed and ibuprofen. They usually go away with these meds, but now they are not. Is it possible the filler got into my sinuses? Should I have it dissolved? The injector also overfilled the area. I don't know if this is causing any problems.
Answer: Can fillers cause sinus problems? Thank you for sharing your questions. The tear trough is a delicate area and should be treated by an experienced oculoplastic surgeon. It is unlikely that the filler caused your sinus problems, but not impossible. The area of overfill can be dissolved. Good luck,

Answer: Sinus issues after dermal filler injections? What you need to know Thank you for your question. Refyne is a hyaluronic acid-based filler, which means it is designed to attract water. This can cause the appearance of more volume than you expected, as well as swelling that may affect your sinuses. Typically, swelling after an injectable treatment goes down in about two weeks, so I recommend waiting until then and seeing if your sinus issues resolve on their own. If not, it is possible to get the fillers dissolved. Make sure that when seeking out filler procedures that you always work with a very experienced, qualified injector. Their knowledge of the face’s anatomy is invaluable and can prevent issues like you are experiencing. Best of luck!

Answer: Improving Under Eye / Tear Trough with Injectable Fillers (Belotero, Volbella, Restylane Silk) -- add Lasers, Microneedling/PRP Thank you for your question! Due to the amount of volume of the filler, it may be possible that swelling can occur. I recommend talking with your provider or getting a formal evaluation by a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and expert in the use of fillers. At my practice, I use combination approaches to give the best results. My patients try to get non-surgical treatments to avoid surgery, so we use fillers, lasers, microneedling/PRP and stem cells. A great addition to your skin care regimen to enhance your results would be our Eye Rolling Package found at Emeragecosmetics.com (see link below).I suggest consulting with an expert to develop a treatment plan best suited for you. Best, Dr. Emer

Answer: Restylane Refyne Thank you for your question! The injection of dermal fillers can create swelling for up to 2 weeks and attract water into the treatment area. Depending on where the filler was placed, it is possible that this is creating pressure on the sinuses themselves, not that they've been injected with dermal filler. If the symptoms don't improve after 2 weeks, I would suggest getting the filler reversed by an experienced provider. Best of luck! Katie Converse, PA-C

Answer: Can Restylane Refyne injected into tear troughs cause sinus problems? Hi Heatherkay, The undereye area is very delicate and fillers can get injected in the wrong anatomical plane. Also, the fillers used attract a lot of fluid and can spread readily. Swelling can also cause symptoms of sinus congestion and vice-versa. Fillers usually cause swelling for two weeks. If your condition does not improve, consider dissolving the filler. Note that dissolving may be done in 2 or 3 times for satisfactory results. It too can cause swelling. All the best, Justin Harper, M.D.
