Can I do EMsculpt on my abs with Essure coils in Fallopian tubes?

Question

I’ve had Essure for about ten years. I did Emsculpt on my butt and thighs without any issues and I’m wondering if doing EMsculpt on my abs is not advised? I know the company says metal implants are a contraindication, but from looking at Essure it seems there’s very little metal (titanium and nickel?) and I’m curious if it really is absolutely not advised in my situation? Thank you!!!

Hi Jen, Not a good idea to have EmSculpt abdominal treatment if you have a metallic IUD.  Best to have it replaced with a non-metallic IUD if you want to have abdominal EmSculpt.  Good luck and be well.Dr. P Encino, CA

Thank you Elizabeth for your correction of my "male ignorance."    Essure was a device for female sterilization. It is a metal coil which when placed into each fallopian tube induces fibrosis and blockage.[1] Essure was designed as an alternative to tubal ligation. However, it was recalled by Bayer in 2018, and the device is no longer sold due to complications secondary to its implantation.  It is made of Titanium, Nickel, and steel so it remains a contra-indication for Emsculpt in my practice.  My advice remains the same, I stand corrected on the location of the contraceptive device, it is not an IUD, it is located in the fallopian tubes, not the uterus.

I hope that Elizabeth uses my correction in her Johns Hopkins teaching of "ignorant males making decisions for women."  I will certainly use her kind words in my teaching at national and international conferences.

The Essuremicro-insert is a spring-like device that consists of a stainless steel inner coil, a nickel-titanium (Nitinol) expanding outer coil, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers. They are MRI compatible up to a magnetic field strength of 1.5 T. They do not interact in any relevant way with the external magnetic or high-frequency field and the temperature increase is within the physiologic range. Make sure you contact a board-certified physician or other experienced practitioners for safe and effective results.
