Can I have wisdom teeth removed before a rhinoplasty?

Question

I am scheduled to have my wisdom teeth out on Feb 24, and I just realized my rhinoplasty is schedueld for Feb 28. I am not having general anesthesia for the wisdom teeth, as they are fully erupted. From what I understand, I'm just having them pulled at the dentist's office. Will this affect my rhinoplasty? My teeth are not in great shape so I'd hate to have to postpone it. But of course I will if it is a concern. Thanks

Having your rhinoplasty surgery four days after wisdom teeth extraction may be problematic. If you develop a complication after your extraction like bleeding, infection or dry socket, further care of your oral wounds may be difficult after your nasal surgery. Unlike rhinoplasty, wisdom teeth extraction may have a painful postoperative course for around one week.You should make your surgeon aware of your situation for definitive advice. While from a surgical site issue there is no interference, you may be very swollen and feel rather uncomfortable going forth with your rhinoplasty after the wisdom teeth extraction.  It also depends on how many teeth you are having removed - if its just one that is impacted vs all 4.  Not to mention whether you are doing your rhinoplasty under MAC or general anesthesia.  I would suggest you contact your surgeons office as they will be able to guide you.  Best of luck on both procedures!

While you will undoubtably have some facial swelling after your wisdom teeth removal, it will not affect your ability to safely and effectively undergo a rhinoplasty surgery days later.

It is possible to remove wisdom teeth before a rhinoplasty procedure, but it probably best to separate the 2 procedures by a few weeks to prevent any complications with anesthesia or the surgical sites. Rhinoplasty is a very difficult endeavor, so choose your surgeon very wisely based on extensive experience.

While healing from a rhinoplasty, it is recommended to avoid major dental work, as there is potential for bacteria to spread through your bloodstream. I tell my patients to schedule their dental work a month in advance, so they can properly heal and reduce their risk of a problem. I would avoid doing any dental work right before your rhinoplasty. Although having the wisdom teeth removed 4 days before the rhinoplasty will not affect the nasal surgery, you are likely to be swollen and uncomfortable from the teeth extraction on the day of your surgery.  Also, make sure the anesthesiologist is aware of your recent wisdom teeth removal so that they do not accidentally cause some bleeding in your mouth with the anesthetic process.  It is probably wise to have more time between the surgeries.  Be sure to discuss this with your rhinoplasty surgeon and good luck.

It is never a good idea to box yourself in time-wise with procedures. While it might work out O.K., your window is short enough that any number of reasons it might not be desirable or even advisable or even possible to do the second procedure on the day planned. Discuss this with your dentist and your plastic surgeon to decide.
