I am 58 years old woman , with a good health . But I suffer of a moderate meralgia paresthetica that produces me some pain at the external flank of my left leg . I am thinking of undergouing a tummy tuck , but wondering if the meralgia could be an additional added risk to that major surgery .
Answer: Tummy tuck An abdominoplasty does not typically cause injury to the nerves that are involved in causing meralgia paresthetica as the dissection plane is above the nerves. However, the tummy tuck may be an opportunity to surgically release the scar overlying the affected nerve and relieve your symptoms or inject an anesthetic/steroid to improve your symptoms.

Answer: Meralgia Paresthetica before Tummy Tuck Notify your PS that you have been diagnosed with a moderate case of Meralgia Paresthetica. If physical therapy provided relief from the compression of the nerve before, your PS may recommend additional treatments or medication to manage your symptoms should they reoccur after the TT. Many times, Meralgia Paresthetica diminishes or disappears over a period of time on its own.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

Answer: Meralgia Paresthetica Hello Galapago.Thank you for your question. Meralgia Paresthetica occurs in about 30% of patients AFTER tummy tuck surgery. When it occurs is usually resolves itself without much treatment, although I have treated some patients with gabapentin or lyrica in the past.Since you have Meralgia already, I believe you will be at higher risks of having symptoms and a longer recovery. Talk to your surgeon about prophylactic treatments for this condition around the time of the surgery.Best wishes. Dr. ALDO

Answer: Tummy tuck and meralgia paresthetica Meralgia Paresthetica is caused by compression/irritation of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. It emerges at the inguinal ligament and supplies sensation to the lateral upper leg. A tummy tuck incision could be in this area and cause irritation. However sometimes excess skin or a tight belt or other type of garment and cause this issue, and the tummy tuck may improve it. Let your surgeon know so he can plan for it during surgery, as well as letting him know what has helped in the past. This will help him take better care of you if it flares after surgery.
