Good question, and one that is not asked enough to be honest with you. I've worked with many oral surgeons who specialize in orthognathic surgery, and the most important thing is finding someone who has a working relationship with the person who is planning on doing your double jaw surgery. There are many questions that need to be answered - how long will you have your braces on? When did they put them in and when are they thinking that you will have adequate alignment for the jaw surgery? Often times if you are having your lower jaw advanced and rotated (which I am guessing is your problem as you are asking about a chin implant), it will help align the vector of the chin at the same time. Sometimes it wont. But your oral surgeon would be able to tell you this and I would hate to see you go through a chin implant, only to have to have it removed once you undergo orthognathic surgery because now you are over projected. The other question you need to ask is if they do surgery on your upper jaw, will it change the position of your nose. This is often overlooked and you should ask about. As you can see, making sure that before any consultation you find from your oral surgeon someone who they work with frequently is best as this is really a "team approach" question. Hope this helped.
It is probably best to undergo the double jaw surgery first, and then placement of a chin implant at that time or any time thereafter. Chin implants are composed of Silastic, and are manufactured in a large array of sizes and shapes is best determined at the time the consultation and examination. As a general rule you should wait to have any chin augmentation to either at the time of orthognathic surgery or after. But this question needs more information such as pictures and the plan of orthognathic surgery to provide a more informed answer.
Hi, I have performed many Chin Augmentations using chin implants for over 30 years. A weak chin creates an imbalance making the nose appear larger, the mid face top heavy and the lower face look short that de-emphasizes the lips and allows early formation of a double chin. Chin augmentation using a chin implant will add projection to the chin creating harmony and balance to the lower face. I have found that placement of a silastic chin implant, through a small curved incision under the chin (also allows excess skin removal) to be very safe, quick, highly effective and far less invasive than a sliding genioplasty. I perform chin implant surgery in 30 minutes or less, often using a local anesthetic alone. The chin implant, when placed through an incision under the chin, should not interfere with jaw surgery but it's best to ask your orthodontist.Hope this helps.
The combination of chin augmentation and submental/jawline liposuction is what will serve you the best. Whether your chin augmentation should be done with an implant or a sliding genioplasty can be debated.
Be aware that the degree of jawline change you are showing is probably not possible as you have to have the soft tissue in the chin area to stretch that much. (that is not a concern in the jaw angle region) Also you have created an artificial labiomental crease above the chin that will not come...
There is no expiration date on a chin implant. I know patients that have had them in for over 30 years. Over long periods of time they can erode into the bone of the jaw, but that may take many years. They can also become infected and require removal, but this is not common. A gen...
Prominent jawbones is a masculine feature that tends to indicate health and virility. But any feature that is excessively out of proportion with the rest of the face is viewed as unattractive
Chin augmentation with silicone implants result in bone resorption over decades. This will mean that you will have to replace the implant with a larger one when this happens.
It is probably best to wait a month after your chin implant placement for getting pregnant to ensure full healing has occurred. In our practice, we use Silastic chin implants which have a better safety record than Medpor.
