Is Thermage treatment safe for people who have lupus?

Question

I had my eyes tattooed decades ago and the colour may have had lead in it. Is the treatment safe for someone who may have lead in their eyeliner tattoo? Thanks.

Hey there,Thermage is Radiofrequency based and not a laser and so you can safely get the treatment done.
  In order to improve the quality of life any cosmetic procedure should be planned in the period of lupus remission and when you are not on any immunosuppressive medications. In lupus, the collagen stimulatory response by Thermage may be delayed or nil. Any cosmetic procedures that manipulates the skin can reactivate lupus. So better to decide after having a proper consultation with a board-certified physician.Hope this helps.

Thermage is safe for many patients who have Lupus and other autoimmune diseases because it is through radiofrequency (heat) and won't affect your skin in a way that other lasers could.  I would always confirm with your treating rheumatologist and preferably be off prednisone before the procedure. Thermage is safe for patients with many autoimmune conditions but the medications must be considered and the patient should definitely be in remission.  Thermage does not produce good results in patients on NSAIDS and steroids must be another consideration.  The pigment in your eyeliner will not be a problem, but that area should not be exposed to the treatment tip.  I would recommend staying at least 1 cm from the tattooed area.  All the best.  Alexis Parker MD
