Jaw Angle Implant: Acute swelling randomly twice 6 months and 10 months post-op. Is this normal?

Recurrent swelling and resolution with antibiotics leads me to believe that you might have a low grade infection of the implant. Please see your plastic surgeon as soon as possible for an evaluation and recommendations.

As with any other implant (breast, hip, knee, vascular implant) late infection may occur months after implant placement. Despite sterility measures that surgeons takes during insertion of an implant small amount of bacteria will always be present on the surface of the implant. They stay dormant for months or years and one day without any obvious reason swelling, redness and occasionally pain may appear. Few days of antibiotics will usually calm this low grade infection. However, like in your case, this set of symptoms will continue to come back in short time intervals.It would be in your best interest to consult the surgeon who performed  your surgery about this condition. He (she) may suggest to remove implant(s) temporary for 3-6 months and treat infection aggressively with antibiotics. After 6 months new implant(s) should be place in the same site(s). Good lack.
