Can you have areola reduction again?

Question

I had areola reduction as my areolas were rather large for my breast size, however I believe the surgeon did not remove much of the areola and they look practically the same. Now I am left with the same size areola and a scar around it. Not to mention paying a lot of money for a procedure that I am very unhappy with. I want to know if the surgeon will take more of the areola away?

It is possible to have a revision to areola reduction surgery in order to improve your results.  However I encourage you to discuss your goals for the procedure as well as the risks and benefits.  It is a risk that the areola can stretch again after surgery.

Reduction of the size of areola can be achieved in local anesthesia; placement of permanent suture in a way that it maintains given size would be the best way to control areola size more or less permanently. Significant enlargement of the scars is seen up to 1 year after surgery which may further contribute to your unsatisfactory result. If you want significantly smaller areolas than these, you should clearly discuss another revision with your surgeon or seek a second opinion. Good luck.

Thank you for sharing your question and photograph and I am sorry that your current results have not been what you anticipated.  It is possible to have your areola reduced to a smaller size to better match your breast volume but it is important to know that it can flatten the appearance of your breasts.  I would also recommend the use of a permanent GoreTex suture in order to prevent areolar "spread" during the healing process.  See an ASPS board certified plastic surgeon in consultation to maximize your results.

Areola reduction can be repeated. However, it may affect negatively the appearance of the breasts. Consult in person with an experienced and expert board certified plastic surgeon to understand your options and limitations.

I am sorry you are not happy with your areola reduction surgery.  Yes, you can re-do the areola reduction.  The two most common sizes are 42mm and 38mm.  The will stretch a few more millimeters as you heal.  From your photos, I would suggest the 38mm for your breast size and nipple shape.Good luck.  Hopefully you will be happy with your revision.
