Once I hit week 3 post op, I've been given the OK to start scar treatment for my 6-9 cm long scars.I've heard silicone sheeting is superior to silicone creams, so I want to try the sheeting.Im considering Scar Away sheets, Mepiform sheets, or Metipac Soft Silicone tape. Do you recommend 1 of these 3 over the other? Or is there another brand that's better? The Metipac silicone tape doesn't mention in its instructions that its meant for scars, so I'm scared to try it. But it has great reviews.
Answer: Scar management after breast surgery Thank you for your question. Breast incisions can be managed using a multimodal approach:1) Scar massage - starting as soon as the surgical dressings come off and the incisions are sealed2) Silicone sheets or scar gels for about six months to year3) Embrace - a tension reducing dressing for the first 2 months4) Fractionated lasers to help blend the scar into the background - done as a series, starting about 4 weeks after surgery and repeated every four weeks for six months.5) Sunscreen to prevent the scars from darkeningThe main role for silicone sheets is to keep the incisions hydrated during the remodelling phase of the scar maturation. This allows the underlying cells to work in a more optimized fashion. The brand is less important but compliance usually follows ease of use. Silicone usually has less skin irritation concerns with use compared to adhesives. They can also be re-used. I find branding to be less important.

Answer: Scar creams Thank you for your question. Typically I recommend using Biocorneum cream. I stopped using the silicone sheeting because I found a lot of patients were getting irritated from it. I would recommend consulting your surgeon and seeing what they recommend. Best of luck to you.

Answer: What is the best silicone gel sheeting brand (Scar Away, Mepiform, Metipac Soft Silicone Tape) to use for recent breast scars? It's a great question. In my office I use clear silicone gel with 30 SPF sunscreen (Silagen or Biocorneum). I use waterproof Band-Aids that stay in place for two weeks, so my patients don't have to worry at all about the incision. All sutures are under the skin, so there's nothing to remove. When the Band-Aids are removed the incision is completely healed and they'll start using silicone gel for the next two months.

Answer: Scar management after breast augmentation Hi, Thanks for posting your question. I am happy to try and help you. It is important to remember that a board certified plastic surgeon will be your best resource when it comes to an accurate assessment of your situation, and concerns. Having said that, you could consider some scar treatments from prescription ointments, silicone sheeting, taping the incisions with steri-strips, or steroid tape. All of these have been shown to be beneficial. Best wishes, Dr. Michael J. Brown Northern Virginia Plastic Surgeon
