Can Smart Lipotriplex be repeated in same area? It has been 17 months.

Question

I had smart lipo twice, abdomen, then 10 months later flanks. It bothered me that my right side protruded out more than the left. I could feel fat in that area and none on the other side. When I went in for my follow up appointment 3 months post surgery, I mentioned to the doctor it appeared uneven. She agreed to do a revision. Is it safe regarding the extra trauma that will be done during a second procedure? She also said she will go in to the abdomen area and smooth it all out

Hello, and thank you for your question.  SmartLipo procedures rely on lasers to liquefy fat before suctioning it from the body.  SmartLipo Triplex gives doctors three laser wave lengths to work with, making it far superior to traditional liposuction techniques.
Although these procedures cause some mild trauma to the body, liposuction treatments may be repeated safely.  This often happens when a patient desires greater results, or a revision is necessary.
Your surgeon will likely ask you to wait at least six months before a follow-up procedure, however.  This gives your body time to heal, and allows your initial results to be properly evaluated.

From time to time a revision and/or touch up is necessary to improve the overall outcome. Although this is rare, it does in fact happen. We recommend our patients wait at least six months before undergoing a touch up procedure. This ensures that a majority of the healing process has taken place and the scar tissue has had time to soften.

Scar tissue can make repeat liposuction more difficult. Adequate healing time of up to 1 year is usually recommended. Smart Lipo or Vaser ultrasound liposuction usually helps scar tissue. Repeated liposuction usually yields less fat and has longer healing times but should improve your results per your plastic surgeon..

I find it hard to make people wait a year for revision surgery, I like to use the VASER system because I can get more energy into the scar tissue. I go back in early if need be 3-6 months

Revision Lipo should be done only after pre and post op pictures have been compared and I would wait a minimum of 1 year.  At that time the changes in that specific area should have completed and  have revision lipo completed.

Yes, you can repeat SmartLipo on an area.  In fact, it is not unusual that an area may need a "touch-up".  In general, it is good to wait 3-6 months in between treatments.

It's unlikely you'd see any increase in complications by repeating the procedure 17 months after your initial liposuction session. There may be some scar tissue in the target spot, but since you're returning to the same surgeon, she should make appropriate technique adjustments to ensure an optimum final result. It is perfectly safe to do a revision of SmartLipo in the same area. It can be a little more difficult because of the scar tissue from the first procedure, but usually it is just a small area that has to be corrected, so the procedure and recovery is not as involved as the first time. I usually wait at least 6 months before doing a revision, because a lot of the irregularities will smooth out during that period on their own. Good luck!
