I'm scheduled for a sliding genioplasty in May, but I'm afraid the genioplasty alone will not give me the jawline I desire. I want to avoid going through two seperate surgeries for obvious reasons, so I'm reconsidering my surgeon. He doesn't do implants. I don't want a significantly wider jaw, I want more definition from the side. Do you think I'm a good candidate for jaw implants or will it make me look freakish? Thanks in advance for your answers
Answer: My vote: freakish. Please, don't try to micro-construct your jaw. We as plastic surgeons aren't that good at exactly modifying jawlines, or even knowing what would look best.I personally prefer chin implants over sliding genioplasties, because the implants are safe and technically straightforward to place and have only rare complications. Cutting the bone comes with more risk, and it's very very hard to adjust it or undo it if you don't like it.And forget about the jaw implants. A small-ish jaw, especially one with small vertical height, is a feminine feature, and I just don't see you being happy by adding more bulk to your jaw except in the forward projection to the chin.

Answer: An alternative to a genioplasty Without an exam your question cannot be answered. However, your photos are helpful and you are probably a good candidate for a Chin Augmentation. You will need to see an Oral/Maxillofacial surgeon to see if othognathic surgery, genioplasty or using an implant is best for your specific case. It should be noted that patients with severely weak jaws or abnormally functioning jaws may be better treated with other facial surgery (orthognathic surgery), although a chin augmentation may be an option at a later time. These patients should seek the advice of a plastic surgeon to determine which course is right for them. Here is some information to help you make this decision:Candidates for Chin Augmentation -Patients whose chin profiles are weak but have normally functioning jaws are candidates for Chin Augmentation. Many of these candidates have used injectable fillers in the past to strengthen the protrusion of their chins, but are looking for a permanent solution. If you are one of these patients, then you are a likely candidate for chin augmentation.

Answer: Chin implants Hello! I personally think you would benefit from a chin implant over sliding genioplasty, quick and easy to do and if you don't like it, it can be removed. For the angle I would recommend you consider fillers such as Juvederm or Voluma to sculpt the contour you seek. Then you will be able to determine if it suits you, and HA fillers can be easily removed with injectable hyaluronidase if you don't like the look. An experienced facial plastic surgeon can help guide you through these procedures. Good luck!

Answer: Sliding genioplasty vs. chin implant No doubts that you will benefit from chin augmentation, sliding genioplasty or chin implant. Both procedures are equally safe and simple when performed by an experienced board certified surgeon. I am not sure whether you would benefit from jaw augmentation? You should seek a consult with a board certified plastic surgeon with expertise in facial implants to discuss your options. Good luck.
