Is it ok to tan after tummy tuck?

Question

I had a tummy tuck on January 4. I usually tan in a tanning bed (terrible, I know!) and I have a pool at home and I am usually in the sun on the weekends. As long as my scars are covered, is it okay to tan?

I am going to say no to tanning in general, but particularly after surgery. Not only is it a fantastic way to get skin cancer, but tanning will make your scars considerably worse. Stay out of the sun and wear sunscreen.

Thanks for your question. I agree with Dr. Jugenburg. Continue applying your sunscreen to the area to avoid any hyperpigmentation.

As long as you cover your scars to avoid UV exposure. Otherwise you may end up with darkened scars. Regards,

I highly discourage tanning, especially after surgery. If there is no way you can avoid the sun, please use sunscreen or cover up to block the sun!
