In CA can thermage be performed by an esthetician when the doctor is not in the office?

I recently had thermage done by an estheticians at a medical spa setting. During my treatment time, I was told the doctor only comes in for other procedures that cannot be done by estheticians (injections and lasers etc). Can estheticians perform thermage while the doctor is not present in the office?
