Is it safe to take a epsom salt bath after liposuction?

Question

I had liposuction on my abdomen, flanks and back 4 days ago. I am healing great. My pain is minimal, bruising is minimal, but I am swollen. Is it safe to soak in a luke warm bath with epsom salts. I have about 6 small incisions ( 0.5 inches long) that are closed with glue, no suture. My doctor has given me the go ahead to resume normal activity. Also. when is it safe to use the sauna?

I recommend following up with your Doctor regarding epsom salt baths/saunas after your procedure. For liposuction after care, I recommend adding hyperbaric oxygen and lymphatic massage along with your compression to help decrease swelling. To improve your final results, I also recommend adding vanquish for further fat removal, exilis/venus legacy for skin tightening, cellutone/z wave to make the skin smooth, remove scar tissue, and improve the skin’s appearance. I allow my patients to shower after a day or two, but you need to follow the instructions of your surgeon about soaking in a tub with epsom salts.  You should always contact your surgeon about postoperative instructions. Lack of cleanliness, and hot temperatures of the sauna can expose you to burns if you lack sensitivity and infection if your incisions have not healed.  I generally ask patients to avoid public bathing options for at least six weeks.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

Hello, good afternoon, thanks for your question and provided information as well.. it depends on your incisions if they're open or closed with dissolvable stitches, because it  is not good to take a bath soon after surgery. Ask your surgeon and double check, I recommend my patients to have showers with bottle water. It is safer.

I have my patients wear a compression garment/girdle for 4 weeks after surgery and don't let them remove it for about 5-7 days.  I don't recommend taking a epsom salt bath and sauna for at least a month after surgery.
