Is raised upper lip line inevitable or can it be avoided? (Photos)

Hello docs I have had approx 2cc’s of Juvederm Ultra injected into my lips over approx 2 months. It had been over a month since my last injection. I am wondering if the upturn on my upper lip (raised lip line area, especially at Cupid’s bows) is avoidable. Wondering if this is a stylistic thing or something that is inevitable with fillers. Ideally (in my opinion) this would be a smoother transition between skin and lip. Any answers/feedback are much appreciated!

Hi Clxz,Lip augmentation with fillers is both artistic and technical.  It appears that your lip augmentation has emphasized your lip border which is causing the upturn.  This result is not inevitable with lip injections, you are correct, it is a stylistic thing.  I would share your preferences with your lip injecting physician in the future to keep your lips a bit more natural in appearance.  Your lips look relatively good at this time so I would not advise dissolving any of your filler.  Good luck and be well. Dr. P Encino, CA

You don't have to have the definition of your upper lip area as a result of fillers.  It is due to the technique used by your injector.  Discuss your treatment goals including what you want as well as what you don't want prior to your next injection.

You don't have to have the injection in the lip border. This is something to discuss with your injector so they could avoid that area and just add volume to your lips.

This is definitely not inevitable but it does depend on injector technique. As an injector and when seeing a new patient, it is important to first discuss what the patient wants to achieve and make sure you are both on the same page. In this case, the injector outlined your upper vermillion border and cupid's bow too much. To prevent this, there should be less volume injected into the vermillion border. Sometimes, you can even inject above the upper lip but not in the lip to make this transition more smooth and natural. Hope that helps! Take Care!
