I have very little collagen due to years of sun exposure. I know about PRP, however, was told PRF is a better treatment. Can you share your experience with skin tightening and collagen production?
Answer: Skin Tightening for the face with J Plasma, lasers, rf treatments, microneedling/prp, ultherapy, Renuvion, Inmode BodyTite A combination approach is needed to get the most improvement with skin tightening for the face. I recommend J Plasma, lasers (Fraxel, Clear + Brilliant, Co2), microneedling/prp, ultherapy and rf treatments to get the best outcomes. PRF is similar to PRP in the sense that it helps to produce collagen and gives the skin a more hydrated appearance. The fact that PRF is comprised from the patient’s own blood is the driving factor for which patients seem interested in this specific treatment. It acts as a temporary volumizer, however the true advantage of this treatment is the rejuvenation of skin quality. Long-term effects, such as skin tightening, collagen production and enhanced skin quality, may take up to three to four months to be noticed and can last from six to 12 months. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist. Best, Dr. Emer

Answer: The best treatment to stimulate collagen and in particular PRP or PRF It is estimated that you are losing Collagen about 1% per year. Certain factors such as genetics, smoking, sun exposure and atmospheric pollutants can all increase the breakdown of collagen. The repair of collagen is a multifaceted approach. You need to first begin with prevention like avoiding sun and the environmental causes such as smoking and using sunscreen or known stimulators such as CE Ferulic from SkinCeuticals. Multiple lasers such as CO2, Erbium, Nd: YAG are beneficial to stimulate collagen. Radio frequency devices that cause increased heat while avoiding distruction of fat such as BTL Exilis are very useful to stimulate collagen. This is how PRP or PRFM works is by using platelet derived growth factors that stimulates collagen growth. Platelets do not last very long without some sort of fibrin matrix to support them, that is why PRFM is more advantageous, it supports platelet growth factor release for a week. Other known stimulators of collagen include Sculptra and threads made from poly L lactic acid. These are things we use in our practice to restore collagen, hopefully this will be helpful and give you ideas in your quest for collagen.
