What could be causing persisting jaw pain after Botox for TMJ?

Question

I received my 3rd round of botox for bruxism/tmj about 2 weeks ago from a highly reputable oral surgeon. A few days after the botox injections, I began experiencing pain on the left side of my jaw - it hurts to chew and to open my mouth wide. I was instructed to use ice and advil for the pain. It's been 2 weeks, and my jaw still hurts. I can't call my doctor today since their office is closed on weekends. What could this pain be, and is it serious?

Probably not a serious problem. Most commonly, its a small bruise that will resolve in a week or so. I have not seen anything more serious than this as a cause, but contact your office when they open.

This may be due to surrounding muscles overworking after your Botox treatment and needs an in-person evaluation. I recommend following up with your injector. Botox results resolve in 3-4 months. Best, Dr. Emer

If the pain occured within few days after the injection it could be from bruising. You should follow up with your physician to have a proper examination to make sure there are no signs of infection.

It is not typical for there to be pain two weeks later from a Botox injection. I’m wondering if you’ve developed an infection at the injection site, or a coincidental abscess in the inside in the same region of the injection.See your provider ASAP to have it looked at.Best. Dr Brecht Seattle, Wa
