Yes, any laser procedure can irritate sensory nerves in the area, enough to create an outbreak. I recommend you use valtrex before and after your treatments. Keep in mind, it will take a series of treatments. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

We always check to see if a patient has a history of Herpes by checking their medical history form and verbally asking them.  To help minimize the chances of an outbreak I have my patients start Valtrex the day before laser treatment and continue until the day after treatment.  Laser treatments do have the tendency to cause outbreak sometimes.

You should be given a prescription by the physician for herpes medication such as Valtrex with instructions. Patients who have a history of herpes outbreaks should be placed on preventative medication before treatments such as lasers and chemical peels to avoid another outbreak. Hope this helps!Johnson C.
