Laser hair removal and genital herpes?

Question

I had a herpes outbreak one month ago. There is no active outbreak at the moment. Is it OK to get laser on my bikini area now, or ever? Do I need to take any medication before to prevent an outbreak? I don't think I can be on any antibiotics when getting laser treatments.

Yes, any laser procedure can irritate sensory nerves in the area, enough to create an outbreak. I recommend you use valtrex before and after your treatments. Keep in mind, it will take a series of treatments. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

We always check to see if a patient has a history of Herpes by checking their medical history form and verbally asking them.  To help minimize the chances of an outbreak I have my patients start Valtrex the day before laser treatment and continue until the day after treatment.  Laser treatments do have the tendency to cause outbreak sometimes.

You should be given a prescription by the physician for herpes medication such as Valtrex with instructions. Patients who have a history of herpes outbreaks should be placed on preventative medication before treatments such as lasers and chemical peels to avoid another outbreak. Hope this helps!Johnson C. Thank you for you question.
Typically a patient with genital herpes can safely be treated if certain
precautions are taken.   Because you have a history of herpes
breakout I would always pre-treat you with a round of antiviral medication
prior to treatment.    Do not receive a treatment if you are having an
active break out.  Ideally, it's best to wait until you are symptom free.
 Then it is still recommended to receive prophylactic medication before, during, and
after treatment with an antiviral like Valtrex.  Discuss this with your laser hair
removal provider to decide which medication would be right for you.
