I had a herpes outbreak one month ago. There is no active outbreak at the moment. Is it OK to get laser on my bikini area now, or ever? Do I need to take any medication before to prevent an outbreak? I don't think I can be on any antibiotics when getting laser treatments.

Answer: Laser hair removal and genital herpes? Thank you for you question. Typically a patient with genital herpes can safely be treated if certain precautions are taken. Because you have a history of herpes breakout I would always pre-treat you with a round of antiviral medication prior to treatment. Do not receive a treatment if you are having an active break out. Ideally, it's best to wait until you are symptom free. Then it is still recommended to receive prophylactic medication before, during, and after treatment with an antiviral like Valtrex. Discuss this with your laser hair removal provider to decide which medication would be right for you.
