Is it normal for hair to grow back the next day after my first laser hair removal treatment? (Photo)

Question

I shave often so my hair grows back quickly. I shaved minutes before my treatment so does that effect anything? I have a lot of hair because I shave often so did the treatment work?

Hello, this looks completely normal. Sometimes when your hair has been lasered the hair gets stuck in the follicle and needs to be gently exfoliated or shaven 3 days post treatment. The hair grows in different stages, not being able to know what the stages are at the time of the treatment it is always recommended to do a series of 6.

It's too soon for results from laser hair removal. It takes a series of treatments. It is recommended to shave the night before or the morning of your treatment to get the best results. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for your question. It typically takes 6-9 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart to see 70-90% reduction in hair growth. You can expect to see about 20% reduction after each session. Having some hair re-growth in between sessions is normal. Please note that annual touch up may be needed to maintain results. First, can we assume that the treatment was effective?  The laser should have left the skin slightly pink with raised areas or swelling around the hair follicles.  If not, then the settings may need to be adjusted up to have an effective treatment.  Shaving just before a treatment is fine.  The laser only needs the small amount of hair in the skin to work.
For an effective treatment, you will be left with "singed stubble."  The stubble will fall out or several days.   The stubble may appear to be growing but is actually just working its way out.  After the stubble falls out, you should not have hair there for a few weeks.  After a few weeks, when you see the hair start to regrow, is the best time for your next treatment.

Hello and thank you for your question.  Laser hair removal does require a series of treatments before seeing the hair reduction, so it is normal to see hair growth after your first treatment.  Depending on the laser being used, laser hair removal usually requires a series of 6-9 treatments spaced 6-8 weeks apart.
