I am interested in getting laser hair removal on my upper lip. I am a fair skinned woman who has dark brown hair. I have a slight mustache on my upper lip that I want to get rid of. I know that there are different types of lasers used for laser hair removal. What would be the best type for me?

Hi Knight.  The most effective laser in your case will be either the Diode or Alexandrite.  These are NOT brands, they are types.  The diode is 810 nanometer light and the Alexandrite is 755 nanometer.  When calling offices, check on what type of laser they use instead of what brand because the wavelength is most important.  If you call and they cannot tell you the TYPE of laser they use, you've likely reached an office you do not want to do the work.  For a more comprehensive discussion of laser hair removal, click on the link below.

Diode, alexandrite and yag lasers work best for hair removal. It will take a series of treatments and some people need treatments to maintain. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a laser hair removal expert. Best, Dr. Emer

For patients with lighter skin types, my first choice laser is the 755 Alexandrite laser. It is safe and effective and a bit more efficient that other lasers, meaning, that you might need fewer treatments. Multiple treatments are still needed.
