Will second hand smoke from my neighbors be enough for my surgeon to cancel my 360 lipo and BBL?

My doctor is strict about no smoking or being exposed to secondhand smoke for a minimum of 44 days pre op. I live in a small multi unit apartment building and my downstairs neighbors are quite the chain smokers of cigarettes and there ones next door to them are avid users of marijuana. I quit smoking marijuana on Oct 1. Will this kind of uncontrollable exposure be enough to show up on both the drug and nicotine tests?

Smoking reduces circulation to the skin and impedes healing.  It is best to avoid smoking, including second hand smoke, and cigarette replacements, such as nicotine patches or gum, in the perioperative period.  Pre and post-op protocols will vary with the plastic surgeon.  You should follow your PS's restriction of no smoking 44 days pre op.  My pre-op preference is that patients should ideally stop smoking for 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after their BBLs, and must NOT smoke for a minimum or 24 hours before and 24 hours after surgery.

Nicotine constricts blood vessels, which limits the blood flow to tissues. You want maximum blood flow to heal optimally. Nicotine stays in your system for at least 2 weeks if you smoke one cigarette. I dont allow smokers to smoke for 4 weeks prior to any cosmetic procedure and 4 weeks after. Most end up quitting altogether if they quit for the 4 weeks before. I dont think second hand smoke from another apartment will affect you but if you lived with someone who smoked, I would ask them to only smoke outside for the 4 weeks before just to be safe.Paul Wigoda, MD

People smoking in your apartment or in the same room or car with you is something to avoid. Someone smoking in another unit in your building should not be enough to cause you to fail the nicotine test.

Hi and welcome to our forum! Nicotine is a blood vessel constrictor and may interfere with the healing process. Your physician wishes to maximize the result and reduce your risk of complications. It is doubtful that your nicotine test will be positive from a smoking neighbor's apartment....and marijuana does not contain nicotine. Each plastic surgeon follows their own protocol for preoperative testing which develops individually as the result of years of experience. Best wishes...
