I am a 54 year old female with type II diabetes. My sugar average is between 130-162. I do take metformin, glipozide and insulin. What are my risks?
Answer: Brazilian Buttock Lift (BBL): Information Dear Ms. Mariesalas,Safety is our number one objective in elective "non necessary" cosmetic surgery. Please make a appointment with your diabetes treating physician who has expertise (that we don't have as Plastic Surgeons) and ask for a preoperative medical clearance. As long as your blood sugars are controlled and Hgb1ac is normal (and no other health issues) you probably will be at minimal increase risk than normal. If you receive a medical clearance I recommend that you make several consultative appointments with Plastic Surgeons who are experienced and Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. In addition ideally they are members of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (denoting by membership as having met additional criteria and a focus on Cosmetic Plastic Surgery).I wish you my best and success,R. Answer: Depends on your overall health Hello Marie and thank you for your question. Having diabetes alone does not negatively impact your ability to have a Brazilian Butt Lift. Your overall health is important and whether or not you have other comorbidities. Having strict control of your blood sugars peri-operatively has been shown to decrease wound healing complications. You should seek consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon with expertise in advanced body contouring techniques to assess your candidacy for this procedure and go over with you your available fat stores and let you decide if the amount of liposuction and potential fat transfer is in line with your goals. If you were my patient I would call your primary care physician or endocrinologist in charge of your diabetes management and ask for a recent HgA1C test and also see if there is anything else they would recommend to optimize your blood sugars and other co-morbidities prior to having surgery. I hope this helps to guide you and I wish you the best of luck!Sincerely,Dr. Sean Kelishadi

Answer: Lipo and BBL You can have lipo and BBL safely as long as you control your sugars and take your medications; diabetics in general are at risk of having incision line healing difficulties; none of the above surgeries require long incision lines but rather small stab incisions which should heal well; please see example of BBL and lipo with tummy tuck patient below.
