I know all implants come with risks, but does a custom wraparound chin and jaw implant pose more of a threat than a simple chin implant when it comes to infections and other complications?
Answer: Chin Implant safety As long as you are healthy the risks are the same. The larger the surface area treated can lead to the possible risk of having a greater infection but there are no studies that support this. Best to seek a consultation from a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, ASPS, ASAPS member.I prefer to use computer morphing to look at various options of what a person can look like.Best, Michael Kulick MD

Answer: Wrap around Jawline Implant As a general rule....the greater the implant load, the greater the result but the greater the risks are as well. It is not a question of material safety it is just that the bigger the implant the bigger are the risks.

Answer: Are Custom Wrap around Chin /Jaw Implants Risky Compared to Regular Chin Implants Dear crimsonprotag, I would suggest that you seek some consultations aided with imaging to show you the changes the various chin implant options can provide for you. In my personal opinion the risk of infection is greatly reduced if you use a sub-mental incision versus an intra oral incision. The implant material itself being made custom or a pre-sized implant will not add any increase in complication however the larger the implant and area being covered could increase risks. Discuss any concerns that you have with your consulting surgeon so that you can be fully informed. Often times patients who are consulting for jaw implants are actually great candidates for buccal fat pad reduction in combination with chin augmentation providing a very nice chiseled jawline. See examples in the link and video attached. Best regards, Michael V. Elam, M.D.

Answer: Jawline You require different incisions for a more complete augmentation, but the key is not this issue but the goal you want to achieve. An isolated chin implant can not equate to proper jawline blended augmentation.

Answer: Are custom wrap around chin/jaw implants as safe as chin implants? Hi, not even close. While placement of a silastic chin implant can be performed through a small curved incision under the chin and the jaw line augmented using a dermal filler....the same can not be said about jaw implants. The degree of invasiveness and unwanted side effects associated with jaw implants is far greater than chin implant surgery. I have performed many facial shaping procedures, including Chin Augmentation with dermal fillers or silastic chin implants, for over 30 years. When the chin is weak, this creates an imbalance making the nose appear larger, the mid face top heavy, the lower face looks short, de-emphasizes the lips and allows early formation of a "double chin". Proper placement of a silastic chin implant adds forward projection to the chin thereby creating harmony and balance to the lower face. Using the same incision, liposuction can be performed to reduce the fat and further shape the neck. Excess skin, from below the chin, can also be removed through the same incision. I have found that placement of a silastic chin implant, through a small curved incision under the chin (also allows excess skin removal) to be very safe, quick, highly effective and far less invasive than a sliding genioplasty (requires extensive tissue dissection, bone cuts and placement of metal screws and plates to secure the cut segments of bone). I perform chin implant surgery in 30 minutes or less, often using a local anesthetic alone. Hope this helps.
