Can I get Botox one month before getting pregnant?

Question

I usually get Botox on my hands for HyperHydrosis, about 100 units, 50 on each hand). I do this every six months or so. Should I stop if I want to conceive? Will it affect the fetus if I get the injections one month before I get pregnant?

Prior to pregnancy botox is fine!  Botox has not been studied in women who are pregnant, however, many of my patients have had treatment without knowledge of their pregnancy and had no issues.  The medication is not absorbed into the body at cosmetic doses and is only effective locally.  In my opinion you have nothing to worry about , congratulations on your news!  My suggestion is if you are concerned to see a "high risk" ob-gyne who can follow you closely during your pregnancy.  But theoretically, this medication should not effect you or your baby negatively.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Hi A03.  As with most other practices, we ask that our patients make us aware of they become pregnant, but treat patients as long as they are not pregnant at the time.  In instances where patients have gotten treatment and then found out they were pregnant, none have had any issues with their pregnancies.

Thank you for your question. There are no studies that show Botox impacts your ability to get pregnant or pregnancy. Out of caution, most doctors will not inject if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. However, I recommend you to follow up with ob/gyn to discuss your concerns and treatment. Best of Luck!

There haven't been any adequate studies investigating the safety of Botox during pregnancy.  My recommendation to all of my female patients is to hold off on Botox until after delivery and breast feeding.  That being said, it is not likely that Botox would harm your fetus should you become pregnant shortly after a treatment.  Many patients have inadvertently gotten Botox while pregnant, and to my knowledge, none have had effects directly attributed to the Botox injections.

To my knowledge, there are no studies that demonstrate harm to a developing baby with use of Botox.  Having said this, due to the hypothetical risk, I do not recommend getting Botox to patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to become pregnant.  Especially at the doses required to treat hyperhydrosis, which are typically much higher than doses of Botox used for aesthetic purposes.I have treated many patients with hyperhydrosis, and although I can't directly relate, I know how difficult it can be to deal with that condition. Thank you for your question. Research studies have not been done with Botox in women who are pregnant or attempting to conceive, primarily because of ethical considerations. There have been women who received Botox early during their pregnancy when they did not realize they were pregnant. The instances of which I am familiar all resulted in normal pregnancies, normal deliveries, and healthy babies. In my practice, I would not have a problem injecting you prior to conception, but I do not treat women whom I know are pregnant. I hope this answer helps.

While technically the medication will not be present 1 month after injections, the effect is still present. This has not been researched adequately at this point to give you a definitive answer, so if there is any concern, I always recommend having a detailed discussion with your doctor.

I do not believe there is any data specifically evaluating the effects of Botox on the fetus when treated 1 month before getting pregnant.  However, I am comfortable administering before to women before they get pregnant and have not seen any adverse effects on the fetus.  You may want to ask your dermatologist and Ob how they feel as everyone likely has a different comfort level.

Although there are no real studies relating to this there has not ever been a problem reported related to Botox and pregnancy and with you gettting pregnant a month later there is no difficulty at all
