How long does it take tetracycline to stain your teeth if you are taking them and does doxycycline do the same thing?

Hi in Lorton, Virginia!  Both drugs, tetracycline and doxycycline can cause permanent grey staining in young children during  the developmental age when their teeth are starting to come in. It does not cause staining in adults. Also a pregnant mother, taking either drug, can damage the unborn child's teeth.  Always be mindful of the side effects of medications!

This topic can we somewhat confusing.  As an adult you will not darken your teeth by taking tetracycline.Tetracycline and the related family of drugs cause severe gray staining to teeth when they are in the developmental stage only.  A pregnant mother can cause staining for her child's teeth.  Children younger than 6 can have staining of their permanent teeth if they take the drug.Once the teeth are developed taking the drugs will have no effect on tooth color.

I think these two drugs will only stain your teeth intrinsically when you're growing. I've not heard that they stain the teeth except in liquid form and that is cleanable with a prophy.
