How long will it take for swelling to go down after a lip fat grafting?

Question

My upper lip now protrudes from my face the same distance as the end of my nose from a profile position. Surgery and fat grafting was done on 2/10/2014. I am thinking that by now, 20 days later, that I have no more hope for it to be surgical swelling and this is going to remain this way permanently. Do you have any words of encouragement for me at this point. I also had cheeks grafted and the fold from the end of the nose to the corner of the mouth at the same time.

Thank you for the question. Fat grafting can be a fantastic treatment for lip augmentation, with some patients achieving permanent results.  The difficulty, however, is that swelling can be unpredictable and relatively long-lasting. In my practice, we sometimes need to use small injections of a steroid to help with persistent swelling. Generally this resolved within 3-4 weeks. Take care.

Thank you for your question. It can take several weeks (approximately 2-4 weeks) for all swelling to resolve after fat grafting to the lips. I recommend having a follow up with your injector in 2 weeks for an evaluation. Best of Luck!
