How to speed up healing after upper eyelid surgery? 6 weeks post op my eyelids are red and scars very itchy and tight. (photo)

Question

I am 6 weeks post blathoplasty but my scars are still itchy , tight, lumpy and slightly painful. left eye especially, as it does not close fully. Can I do anything to speed up the healing process, use any scar creams, topical steroids etc? Been only using Vaseline so far and had a course of antibiotics earlier on. Please help.

It is not normal to have this much irritation in the skin and incision. I wonder if you are using something on the skin that is bother you. Perhaps you are using a medicated antibiotic ointment that is causing a dermatitis. Please get help.

Thank you ever so much for your question.What has your surgeon said when you've spoken with him? Please refer back to your clinic/surgery as it looks like you've had a reaction to either something that's been given to you, or something that has been placed on the eyelids. This is nothing to do with the surgery, but looks extra sensitive! With regards to your healing, you still are settling and healing currently, so give yourself some time on this. Always consult with your Plastic Surgeon if you have any concerns, as you want your healing time to be as 'bearable' as possible.Good luck!

It looks and sounds like you are having an allergic reaction to something you are putting on the skin.  Although not common, some people are allergic to Vaseline.  You should see your doctor - a steroid cream for a few days should help to decrease the redness, itching and tight feeling you are having.

Thank you for your question and photo. I would strongly recommend that you follow up with your surgeon as it appears that you might be having an allergic reaction to an ointment that you are applying to your eyelids. It is not too common to have those symptoms you described 6 weeks post op. You should be healing and feeling better at this point in your recovery. Best of luck, Dr. Heffernan

Many thanks for the query.6 weeks is early after surgery. It will settle in time. Gentle massage with any cream/ Vaseline / bio oil is good. Were your wounds closed with Vicryl ? This suture can be lumpy for some time.BestMark
