Silicone sheets VS paper tape for surgical scars?

Are Micropore Surgical (paper) tape or Silicone sheets (e.g. Embrace) better for preventing bad scars? Can you use both varying days? Also, with Silicone sheets, is it possible to massage a scar with a scar salve underneath (then place the sheet on top), or will it not stick? Thanks!

Hello Geraldbean,Long term use of paper tape has not been shown to affect scar healing.  I personally use Micropore tape early on for my patients while the wound is still open and healing following surgery, as I feel it does help in the immediate post operative period.  Once the wound is healed over I transition my patients over to a silicone based product.  Studies have shown that silicone can improve scar appearance.  I like to use Embrace for wounds that are on the body and a liquid silicone, BioCorneum, for wounds on the face.  For your question you could not put a salve underneath a silicone sheet or it won't stick.  The silicone also needs to be in contact with the wound to be effective. I'd recommend you find someone in your area that is comfortable treating scars as appropriate early treatment can have a significant impact on improving scars without any aggressive interventions.  I hope this helps and good luck.
