PRP after transplant: Is it possible to damage transplanted follicles with PRP injections?

Question

Hello, I’ve recently had some PRP done across my scalp 18 months post FUE. I feel like the effects have been bad and that my hair is now worse. Is it possible to damage transplanted follicles with PRP injections? I fear my transplanted follicles may be falling out after 2 sessions of PRP. Any ideas or thoughts? Thanks

Thank you for posting this question. You cannot "damage" hair follicles with PRP, but it can induce a brief period of shedding. Really any and all treatments that are significantly effective in treating hair loss can cause a brief shedding period when starting the treatment. I would follow up with your doctor and have a look at the photographs that were taken prior to surgery. It is unlikely that PRP done properly would damage transplanted grafts through a prior FUE procedure. The needle is small and injected to a subdermal or superficial depth. The PRP may induce a temporary shed or effluvium. Recovery should be within a few months and hair may come back stronger than it was originally. Good luck!

Thank you for your question. It is highly unlikely the PRP injections are leading to a shedding of your transplanted follicles. PRP is rich in growth factors which promotes healthier hair growth. Part of our post-transplant protocol includes PRP sessions to promote healthy growth of the transplanted follicles. If you are shedding follicles and noticing a decrease in density I suspect the native follicles are continuing to shed. We all shed around 70 to 100 hair follicles per day as part of the normal turnover. In the coming months these should grow back unless your hair loss is progressing. It is critical to be on a DHT blocker such as finasteride to help prevent or slow the progression of hair loss.I hope this was helpful - Dr. Moore.

If PRP Treatments are done the right way you should have absolutely no loss whatsoever. Losing hair from our PRP treatments isn't possible because it's a natural solution. Its your own blood. It actually boosts the follicles and helps them grow faster.  There is no possible way to lose or shed more with PRP injections because PRP helps stop shedding.

Hello, Thank you for your question. By 18 month post-op, it is unlikely to have the transplanted follicles get damaged by PRP treatment. PRP is being injected with very fine (thin) needle, so it should not cause any damaging or scarring.

It is very unlikely that PRP treatments (18 months after FUE) would damage your transplanted follicles.  PRP treatment by injection and/or microneedling is very safe and should not be a concern.

The PRP with not physically damage the transplanted hairs, but as some of the other doctors mentioned you could have some initial shedding shortly after the PRP trreatment. If shedding of transplanted hairs occur this should be temporary.
