Has my Juvederm lips filler been injected into a blood vessel?! (Photos)

Question

Hi hope someone could advise. I had lip filler (juvederm) injected by a new practitioner 2 days ago. My lip immediately bruised aswell as the face area around my lips. It has now begun bleeding again internally and my lips have cracked and are bleeding slightly externally. I know this is NOT normal.. Should I be worried?

Hello there. From the pictures you have sent there is no evidence of an intravascular injection. However, I would need to assess the skin around the lips to be sure. If in doubt see the surgeon who performed the filler injection as he/she will be able to determine what exactly is occurring.

This appears to be a bruise which can be typical after lip fillers. If you remain concerned, I recommend following up with your injector. I would wait a full 2 weeks before judging the results. If it is after the two week wait, you can have the filler reversed with hyaluronidase.

Thank you for your question. From your photo, this appears to be a bruise which is common after lip augmentation. Typically, swelling and bruising can take up to 2 weeks to resolve. You can apply cold compresses to the treated area to help reduce swelling and bruising. It is also advisable to avoid any NSAID’s such as ibuprofen before and after treatment as they tend to thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising and swelling. If you have any other concerns please follow up with your injector. Best of Luck!

thankyou for your question. When injecting into lips the bruising risk is high . I suspect that it has pierced a vein ( not uncommon) and you have had a good bleed. 
 I would just touch base with your injector  more reassurance. It will settle . mean while try not to knock it as it may rebleed.

Thank you for the pictures Amber, the lips are filled with small blood vessels and there can be significant bruising and swelling if one or a few of these are traumatised during the treatment. From the photos I can’t see any evidence that the blood supply has been reduced as a result of the filler having been put directly into a blood vessel. I would keep using arnica, ice and vasaline to moisturise the lips and then return for an assessment with the treating practitioner. Best of luck
