Believe it or not, there are studies that show that people with nasal obstruction early in life, are likely to have a recessed chin or a shorter lower jaw line. It is related to the chronic mouth breathing that is associated with nasal congestion or obstruction. It is common in patients with chronic nasal allergies in early childhood. Correction of the nasal obstruction is better done earlier than later in the growth cycle. Chin implants or jaw surgery are often necessary to correct the cosmetic profile. John Standefer MD
There are many issues inside the nose that can cause breathing problems, such as a deviated nasal septum, valve collapse, vestibular stenosis, turbinate hypertrophy, a broken nose, allergies, and chronic sinusitis. Each one of these issues are treated differently with either medications or surgery. Once patients have failed medical therapy, consider surgical intervention. A recessive chin is treated cosmetically with a chin implant. A chin implant will have no bearing on the way the teeth fit together. Chin implants are manufactured in a variety of sizes and shapes, are composed of Silastic, and are inserted through a submental approach under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure.
