I agree with my colleagues that it is critically important to avoid tobacco use, and I recommend that patients abstain from any nicotine exposure for at least six weeks. The kind of procedures that you are considering require skin to be elevated and that compromises its blood supply. Nicotine causes further constriction of those blood vessels, and consequently puts a patient at risk for skin loss, wound healing problems, infection, and scarring. Nothing substitutes for good judgement, and you should do everything you can to minimize your risks and optimize your chances for a great surgical outcome. I would encourage you to discuss the matter further with your operative surgeon, and consider involving your internist in efforts to discontinue tobacco use. Best of luck!
