Why are my lip injections wearing off so quickly?

I started lip injections this year and had one syringe of Juvederm objected in late August, and one syringe in early October. Both have basically worn off by now. If I keep up with the injections every few months, will each syringe eventually last longer? Why haven’t my results lasted for longer than a couple months?

Greetings,Fillers are metabolized differently by different patients, but 2 months would be a very quick breakdown for anyone.  You may need to consider trying a different filler, but before doing that, I would advise visiting with your injector and comparing photos from before treatment and now so that you can get the most accurate picture of what is going on before drawing any conclusions.  Good luck!

This is difficult to answer without pictures. I recommend following up with your injector. A longer-lasting filler may be needed to get the results you want. Fat or implants are long-lasting alternatives. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  There are a number of variables that go into the longevity of fillers and certainly the more active mouth muscles will have a tendency of breaking them down faster than other parts of the face.  You can try and increase their duration by using thicker products, more filler, or a different brand of filler.  Hope this helps.

There are various reasons why lip fillers will vary in longevity. A degree of this will be due to the type and quantity of filler used to treat the lip, but there will also be a degree of variance due to the patient specific factors. I would recommend speaking to your injector to discuss potentially changing the filler or dose to see if this can help you achieve longer lasting results.

Patients who seem to break down their filler very quickly, a doctor has to switch to a different type of a filler. So if Juvederm is not working for you ask your doctor for Restylane or Restylane defyne which should last considerably longer.

Typically fillers in the lips last 6-9 months, however there are patients that break down fillers faster than others. Hyaluronic acid is a natural protein, allowing it to gradually be absorbed into the body. Additionally injections, or touch ups, may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results. The natural protein used, allows it to pose little risk of an allergic reaction. Follow up with injector with any questions or concerns that you many have. Also, you can consult with a board certified plastic surgeon for more permanent lip filler options. Hope this helps.

In general, the longevity of fillers have not much to do with the manufacturer's claims. Certainly, there are those who break down fillers more rapidly than the others and this relates to many possible factors. I suggest you try fillers that are known to last longer and, depending on your locations, the choice is quite good. All hyaluronic acid fillers that are used mostly for volume enhancements are good choices even though they may be recommended for other areas. Most of the time, the "recommended" applications are based on local availability of a particular filler so this should not be of concern. Good luck!

Everyone is slightly different and it possible that you are breaking down the filler more quickly. Juverderm Volbella is a lovely soft filler in the lips and lasts from around 6-12 months normally. 
After each session, there is often some natural fibrosis that occurs which leaves a residual volume, and repeated treatments with the same amount of filler will make the lips bigger with each subsequent session. Your practitioner should have a reference photograph to ensure that you retain a constant natural look.
