Scheduled for surgery in a few days, is it safe to take probiotics before surgery?

Hi I'm scheduled for surgery in a few days Tuesday 4/14/15. I know that constipation can be a big problem I wanted to get a head start with probiotics just wanted to make sure it is safe to take before surgery. Thank you

While probiotics are often a great thing to have on board at the time of surgery I ask all of my patients to let me know what supplements they are taking.  Some things out there make one bleed more and others can interact with anesthesia.  Before taking anything, check with your surgeon.  You may be on the web since it is the weekend but these days many of us answer email and you can always call the answering service for a quick question.  Good luck!

You are wise to consider the potential for postoperative constipation. Let your plastic surgeon know exactly what you are planning on utilizing; most likely, it should not be an issue. Best wishes for a complication free operation.

Constipation is a common problem following surgery.  You are wise to plan ahead.  Let your Plastic Surgeon know your thoughts, and it is doubtful there would be a problem.
